Normally when we take you behind the scenes of a celebrity getting ready for a big event, it’s a very crowded experience. You have the person attending the event, their makeup artist, their hairstylist, their stylist (all of whom probably have at least one assistant) and maybe a manicurist (if they haven’t had a chance to head to the nail salon the day before). Not the case with the Quann sisters. For Cipriana, the founder and editor in chief of Urban Bush Babes, and her identical twin TK, who is a singer/songwriter/lyricist as well as executive contributor for the site, getting ready for a party or red carpet is an intimate experience, and strictly a family affair — something I discovered when they agreed to share their prep process for the Dior x Guggenheim International Gala Pre-Party in New York City last night.
“We do all of our own styling, our own makeup, our own hair. It’s a full-fledged team within ourselves,” says TK. “I think that after years of trial and error, testing out products that work for us, particularly with our hair, no one knows what works for us best than ourselves.” Beyond that, styling appeals to the Quann’s creative spirits — and to put it simply, is something they just really like to do. “We’re always very inspired when it comes to fashion and beauty,” says TK. “And we enjoy styling, it’s something we immensely enjoy, so I don’t see why we need someone else to do it when we like doing it for ourselves.”
Cipriana echoes those sentiments. “We’re artists at heart. TK’s been an artist, a musician, and a writer since the womb, and I’ve been a visual artist — doing painting and charcoal — since I was a little girl and for us, styling and makeup are like working with a canvas. The body is a canvas, the face is canvas, and it’s very artistically inspiring and that’s one of the reasons why we enjoy it so much. I know some people are like, Ugh I have to get makeup done, ugh I have to decide what to wear, but for us, we feel like it’s all just an artistic canvas that’s waiting to be created upon every single day. So when TK says we really enjoy it. We do, we really enjoy it, so I think that’s why we prefer to just do it ourselves because we have so much love for the artistic creation of it.”
In addition to being fans of the musician performing at Guggenheim Gala Pre-Party, singer Jorja Smith, both sisters were excited for the night in general. “We go to a lot of events and we have our favorites of the year and this is definitely in the top five because we always know that we’re going to have a good time,” says Cipriana. “It’s for a great cause, it’s at the Guggenheim, it’s always a fun crowd, great food, great music, and that’s a recipe for an amazing event.” But before they got to go have fun, I hopped on the phone with both of them to chat about the hair, makeup, and sartorial choices they made for their evening (which they did with a little help from Dior) — and scoop some of their beauty secrets in the process.
“[From Dior] I pulled a beautiful, sheer, long tulle skirt, a handbag, and these beautiful nude pumps that have a clear heel,” says TK (pictured above). “They look very similar to a ballet shoe and I’m pairing that with my own blazer and blouse, so it’s nice that Dior trusts us to incorporate our own style and mix and match as well.”
